5 Home Security Tips for Halloween

Halloween, that time of year when we open our doors to give out candy to all the cute little trick or treaters! It’s a night of fun and festivity, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t take steps to make sure that we stay safe.

Here are just a few simple steps to help everyone stay safe on Halloween:

  1. Keep your home well lit. This not only helps children reach your front porch without tripping over the steps, but also lets gives you clear sight of what’s going on after dark. Even when you are done for the night, it’s not a bad idea to keep a light on.

  1. Keep all other doors locked. You will only be handing out candy from the front door so there is no need to keep other doors unlocked. It is also good practice to lock your front door after each trick or treater.

  1. Set a time for when to close your doors. Most parents will take their kids home by 9 pm. Set a time to lock up and let trick or treaters know by turning off the front light.

  1. Avoid fire hazards. Instead of using candles to light your Jack-o-Lantern, consider Christmas lights.

  1. If you see something suspicious, call your local police department. Trust your first instinct. It’s easy to write it off as just kids, especially on Halloween, but this is not always the case. If it’s an emergency, call 911.

Happy Halloween and stay safe!
